That's What Friends Are For
It's April and that means that Creating Keepsakes is in town for the spring scrapbook convention in Mesa. Maybe it's because Mesa is in our backyard or maybe it's because the spring CKC always falls on 'birthday weekend' ... RaKell's birthday was Friday and Justin's birthday is tomorrow ... But, we've stopped participating and taking classes in the spring, holding out for the September CKC which is held in downtown Phoenix in the new Convention Center. However, with two dear friends and fellow Obsessed scrappers in town from Colorado, we thought it would be fun to hit the Vendor Faire at the Mesa Convention Center before lunch.
Joy has been here since mid-February. She came to town in time for her grandson Tyler's birthday and is giving the 'snowbird' life a test run. Nancy owns a 2nd home in Scottsdale, which she hopes will become her primary residence later this year, and she's in town for a couple of weeks. So, when we decided to get together for lunch, Duana suggested we stop at the convention and do a little shopping. Because, my sister's motto is 'It's more fun to shop for scrapping supplies than it is to scrap with them!" hehehehe We hooked up with my dil, Lisa, who had the day off work and gone up with her friend, Sandy, and spent a couple hours and a bit 'o ca$h and had a good time.
While I was there I was reminded of the Phoenix scrapbook convention we attended 2 years ago when we had a fire drill ... right in the middle of our afternoon class with Heidi Swapp! Yikes! No one took it very seriously, but the fire department showed up and we were forced to evacuate the building, immediately, along with a several thousand other scrappers! We stood outside in the heat for about 30 minutes or so, until the building was cleared and we were allowed back into the air conditioned sanctuary. It's rare that I do a 2-page layout, but it took 2 pages to get the story told of that convention adventure!
And, although this has nothing to do with scrapping, I thought I'd share some pictures of a mini-adventure we had last week. Sweet Tomatoes is finally opening a new location over by Justin and Lisa's house. They were doing a pre-opening promotion last weekend as a way to 'test' the operations and give the employees a practice run before their official opening. The prices for the salad bar/breakfast bar/pizza,pasta,soup bar had been reduced and all proceeds were to be donated to Tori's school! (Chaparral Elementary won the honor in a lottery drawing). So, I joined Justin, Lisa, and Tori for an early lunch last Saturday, to check out the restaurant and support Tori's school.
Lunch was fresh and delicious. But, that's not the mini-adventure I wanted to share with you. As we were leaving the crowded restaurant and were walking back to our car, we spotted a row of stainless steel Delorian's parked in front of another restaurant in the shopping center. Well, it's not often that you see a Delorian these days, let alone FIVE of them in once place! And, the gull-wing doors of one was suspended in the air, open and inviting anyone to take a peek at the inside.
As we approached the row of cars we noticed the opened one was laden with huge black spoiler vent thing's in the rear, tubes and wires and equipment running from front to back to front again ... and wait ... what 's this ... a Mr. Fusion Home Energy Reactor on the back??!! Why this is the car from the movie Back To the Future! Right in our own backyard!
Lisa ended up chatting with the owner of the car. He and his fellow Delorian owners were having brunch on the outdoor patio of the restaurant ... keeping an eye on their cars and enjoying the attention they were getting. It ended up that this wasn't THE car used in the movie. It was the prototype used by the movie studio and was on display for years at Universal Studios. But, just the same, it was fun to see! And, this part is for my Mom ... because she loves reading clever license plates ...
My Scrapbook Obsessions kit is spread out on my scrap table and I'm busy working on layouts for the May newsletter. The Prima papers in this month's kit are just beautiful and I'm having a blast working with them. Can't show you anything yet .. maybe a sneak peek next week ... so, until then ....
Have a great Sunday!

So sad I missed you on Friday! I am glad you guys went shopping for just a bit, I plan on going to Phoenix so we will definitely have to get together then! How cool to see all those fun cars and license plates. Love Sweet Tomatoes! It is such a great restaurant. Thanks for putting my future ex husband on your blog too, though I couldn't see the video (no longer available) so I just watched it at home from the dvr.

Ya know, Colette, if I didn't just absolutely adore my boys and the stages they are in, I would be terribly covetous of your exciting scrapbooking life and adventures!! You are always going some place fun and meeting fun, exciting people!! Glad you had a fun time shopping!
So very cool that you got to see all those delorians. The fellow that did some of the body work on the Batmobile lives here in town, so my boys have gotten to see that a couple times, but I would LOve to see the BTTF car I LOVED those movies!!!!
Your layouts are absolutely beautiful. I'm constantly amazed at how you are always "turned up to high" seriously you never have a dull page! So much fun to look at each and every one!!
Thanks so much for stopping by my blog. I hope the resizing thing works for you, if not just let me know and I'll try to clarify if I can. "don't want to leave out that all important secret ingredient" LOL!!!

Sounds like a good time was had by all... I'm a bit sad I missed the fun but I know there will be other scrappin' events in the future (Next Sunday perhaps). OMG... and memories of scrapbook conventions past, I just love that layout! It always reminds me of the fun, shopping, classes and of course, STARBUCKS! The colors are awesome. I'm always impressed by how you are able to take a picture of many people NOT wearing similar colors and in create a beautiful, color-perfect layout. You have a gift when it comes to color!! Until later... Moochies :)
